Bleeding disorders
Hemophilia
-
-
-
A deficiency impairs clotting by the intrinsic pathway--> able to form a platelet plug but cannot form a stable clot
S&S
Mild cases- Severe cases (frequent spontaneous bleeding),
Tx
Desmopressin- drug to treat mild bleeding, Factor VIII replacement therapy
Tests
Clotting is assessed by Prothrombin Time: assesses the extrinsic pathway- measures clotting time of plasma sample after exposed to tissue factor
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time: assess the intrinsic pathway, measures clotting time of a plasma sample after being exposed to a substance that mimics an artificial surface
Thrombocytopenia
= a decrease in number of circulating platelets, bleeding affects smaller blood vessels of the skin mucosal membranes
-
-
Clotting (vit K def, hemophilia, liver disease)
Blood vessel integrity (vit C def, Cushings, aging)
