Formative Assessment
A method to monitor student’s learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors or teachers to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.

Summative Assessment
A method to evaluate student’s learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

Diagnostic Assessment
A form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.

High Stakes Assessment
Any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, or districts, most commonly for the purpose of accountability.
The purpose of high stakes assessments are to ensure the federal, state, or local government agencies and school administrators that students are enrolled in effective schools and being taught by effective teachers
An advantage of high stakes assessments is helps governments, schools, and teachers see where students are doing well and where they're struggling. In some states, these assessments may also help schools get more money from the government.
A disadvantage of high stakes assessments is that it offers no assistance to the process of learning. Teachers can't give guidance or feedback during the process of learning. Another disadvantage may be that in some states, high stakes assessments may take money away from schools, depending on students' performance.
High stakes assessments are assessments of learning because they are tests that assess the student's understanding of topics which have already been covered.

Portfolio Assessment
Portfolio assessment is an assessment form that learners do together with their teachers, in that there's a portfolio kept of the student's work over time.

Authentic Assessment
The measurement of intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful.
The purpose is to focus on contextualized tasks, enabling students to demonstrate their competency in a more authentic setting.
An advantage of authentic assessment is it allows the student to practice skills or learning strategies in a real life or practical setting.
A disadvantage is that teachers won't be able to give direction during the learning process because it's an assessment after all the learning has been done.
Authentic assessments are assessments of learning, as they are products and are at the end of the learning process.
