Section L: Mitosis and Meiosis
Meiosis
gametes (sex cells) have half the normal number of chromosomes called haploid
gametes are produced by meiosis
-makes each gamete slightly different from one another
-ensures cells are haploid
Normal body cells in mammals are diploids meaning they have two copies of each chromosomes
-you can put the chromosomes into pairs
-sometimes called homologous parents
-each chromosome in the pair either comes from the mother or the father
1st cell division
2nd cell division
46 = 23 pairs diploid = 23 sperm & 23 egg = fertilisation = 46
gametes:
animals-egg(ovum) & sperm
plants-pollen & ovule
ovary or testis in animals
anther or ovary in plants
Mitosis
the process by which normal cells divide
cells divide...
so that multicellular organisms can grow
to replace old or damaged cells (repair)
one (parent) cell will divide into two daughter cells
can take place when identical organisms are produced by asexual reproduction or cloning
e.g. plants or unicellular organisms (amaeba)
-strawberries
-spider plants
-hydra
daughter cells have same numbers of chromosomes as parent cell
goes from 1 cell to two
