Biodiversity and the effect of human interaction on ecosystems
Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of different organisms within an ecosystem.
A good biodiversity stabilises ecosystems by allowing predators to rely on more than one species of prey
Humans are destroying biodiversity w/ deforestation and global warming
Waste management
More humans mean more chemicals used
Some of these chemicals damage the environment
Chemicals that cause damage are sewage, fertiliser, pesticides, nitrogen oxides (acid rain)
Land management
Humans are using up more space for farming 1 crop, reducing biodiversity.
Humans are destroying peat bogs, which release lots of CO2, and also reduces biodiversity.
Deforestation
This reduces biodiversity, and also provides space for cattle and rice farming
Cattle and rice farming produce lots of CO2
Maintaining biodiversity
Humans are trying to reverse our effects on Biodiversity
This is with breeding progreammes and habitat restoration and increasing field margins
Factors affecting food security
Some factors include:
Increasing population, changing diets, pests, human conflict.
Sustainable fisheries
We are being very unsustainable with our fishing.
Lots of fish are disappearing. We need larger holes in nets, and we need to stop fishing during breeding season
Biotechnology
Biotechnology is changing the world. We no longer have complete dependence on some foods.
The fungus Fusarium is used to create pseudo meat.
Genetically modified bacteria is used to create insulin
GM crops can provide extra nutrients.
