Plant Propagation =
Stem Cuttings
1. Method of Asexual Propagation
- can take cuttings from the stem, leaf, root or buds
2. Types
a. Softwood cutting
= new soft spring / early summer growth i.e. fuchsia, lavender, geranium
b. Semi-hardwood cuttings
= slightly older tissue in summer / early autumn - will snap when bent. Hebe, buxes, lavender
c. Hardwood cuttings
- mature wood does not bend easily - winter or late autumn cut = currants, willow, conifers
3. Cutting Location
Nodal
= cut just below a node (where leaf grows out) = suitable for many types of cuttings and new cells (roots) will grow here quickly as lots of auxin hormone here
Internodal
= between the nodes - suitable for climbing and creeping species - Ivy, clematis, honeysuckle
4. Criteria
Pick suitable time of year
Use healthy Plants
Cut under a node and make it 10-25 cm long
Remove lower leaves and flowers
Dip in rooting hormone
Place in suitable growing media = compost or soil
In a light warm sheltered place
5. Locations
warm heating bench = to keep roots warm
Fog and mist - large operations - precise environmental control inside
Polytunnel - to protect them
Cold frame
Open soil for hardwood cutting
