ODE ON INDOLENCE p.130
Stanza 3
pass'd, faded; burn'd, ached
First two are ghostly, calm + distant and may resemble earlier stanzas
The latter two are hellish and link to demon = negative imagery; they contradict earlier stanzas; increasing pain and violent - is he becoming angry that they have disturbed him? is he in pain bc he cannot achieve them?
-
The contrast between the verbs emphasisses the fact that the figures are ghost-like whilst he is human and therefore experiences pain and pleasure
The passionate latter verbs contract Stanza 2 where pain had no sting, and pleasure's wreath no flower
-
Stanza 4
-
forsooth! - meaning truly and accompanied with the exclamation make emphasises that in this particular moment he wanted after them
-
-
-
-
-
Stanza 5
Lush, natural, peaceful imagery
-
2nd part - he claims that he wasn't upset when they left before, so why have they returned
stirring shades, and baffled beams
-
-
-
open casement - suggests that he is open, although he continually asserts that he is not
Stanza 6
Poem seems to be conclusive - he tells them go, yet is ironic coz they must have returned for him to write this poem
-
-
Past resolution - he says he doesn't want those things, yet he writes about them (like a cycle)
