As the schools grew to expand, the number of boarding houses grew - opportunities for more sport (interhouse)
DR Thomas Arnold was headmaster at Rugby School. He wanted his pupils to grow up to be moral christian gentlemen. He did not value sport himself but, he saw the value behind it and he encouraged the boys to take part.

1845 - pupils of Rugby wrote down the rules of football :soccer: to ensure fair play, Eton had their own rules (no hands).
The boys took the games on to university. (melting pot 2). The football association was formed in 1863.
The boys went on to various professions that helped to spread games around the country and the world.
