Identifying and Assisting Struggling Students
Teacher must first observe and notice a students difficulties either academically, behaviorally or socially.
Social
: shy when meeting new people or felt uncomfortable when around people outside of the students immediate family (1).
Student does not interact with other students
Meet with student one on one
: Discuss what is making him uncomfortable around other students and if there is anything you can do to help.
Student withholds what is bothering him/her
Observe closely and document
" Over the next few weeks document interactions with other students and keep an eye for when the student is shy and when they are not.
Meet with student to explain observations
: Delicately meet with the student and explain what you think is happening and check truthfulness of observations
Incorrect Assumptions
: Meet with parents and administrator and get the counselor involved in weekly meetings to get to the root of the issue.
Implementation of social plan for student
: After a few weeks of meetings, meet with parents and implement plan of action for student engagement after having got to bottom of social issue.

: Have student take standardized test for grade level to determine how far behind student is.
Student Tests Below Grade Level
: Host a meeting with parents and school administrators to discuss plan to bring student backup to grade level which includes but not limited to: after school work and extra work in school with teacher.
Monitor for 3-4 weeks
Scores Do Not Improve
: Bring in professional with school administrators and parents to test for possible mental disability.
Scores Improve
: Maintain extra assistance for a few weeks before student shows proficiency in skills necessary to be successful in class.
Student Tests at Grade Level
: Ensure student is putting in effort at school, and provide activities for student with more engagement to ensure interest is maintained in school.
Notify Parents
: After a unit of low scores notify parents of lack of knowledge and plan to increase scores and engagement in class.
Low Scores in Specific Subject Area
In class Assistance
: Teacher spends extra time in class during those specific subject times assisting student with work and comprehension.
Scores Do Not Improve:
Outside of class assistance may be necessary for extra practice at recess or after school.
Scores Do Not Improve
Meet with parents and counselor about possible action plan to either increase knowledge of subject or interest of subject.
Scores Improve
: Continue outside of class assistance for about a month then reassess.

: Student receives higher grades in that subject, and eventually requires less help one on one.
At Home Assistance
: Teacher notifies parents of lack of comprehension and encourages parents to spend extra time at home with student review subject matter.
Behavior

Bad Classroom Behavior
: Student begins to display outbursts in class and disrespect towards teacher
Teacher begins to approach student and ask reasons for inappropriate behavior
Teacher along with administrator meet with parents to discuss options for behavior improvement
Teacher begins to document inappropriate behavior for 2-3 weeks then consults with administrator (AP or Counselor)
Student Behavior Tracking Sheet
: Students behavior is tracked weekly by teacher and sent home to parents for review and discussion happens at home about inappropriate behavior. This should be done for 3-4 weeks.
Behavior Improves
: Student is taken off tracking sheet with agreement that behavior maintains the same or another tracking sheet will be utilized.
Behavior does not improve
" Bring in parents for another meeting and discuss behavior at home. If behavior is consistent with home, refer student to outside help.
Positive Reinforcement
: Student is told he would receive better grades or other outside of classroom opportunities for improved behavior which is discussed in front of parents.
Behavior Improves
: Maintain reinforcement for a few weeks until good behavior becomes habitual for the student
Behavior does not improve
: Student has another meeting with parents and administrators to discuss reasons for no improvement.
Remove Reinforcement and Utilize Counselor
: Plan weekly meetings between student and counselor to try to get to the root of the behavior and fix as needed.
Request Assistant from Outside Professional
: Refer student to outside behavior management professional to seek further assistance in maintaining the students learning environment
Bullying
: Student begins to display inappropriate behavior toward another student
Student is Bullying
Meet with Student
: Teacher and administrator meet with student to ask why student is bullying.
Student is having home difficulties
: Meet with parents and administration to discuss home problems student is facing and how it can be corrected.
Student is having school difficulties
: Ask student what can be done to make him more comfortable at school. Put together an action plan to be documented and signed by school and parents to ensure student becomes more comfortable in the classroom.
Student is being Bullied
Meet with Student
: Teacher and administrator meet with student (parents present possibly) to ask who is bullying them and why.
Meet with Bully and Student
: Discuss reasons for bullying and express consequences of bullying at the school
Behavior Improves
: Inform parents of success and maintain tracking of bully for future incidents
Behavior does not Improve
: Enforce consequences on the bully, meet with parents of bully to discuss issues. Ensure bullied student is removed from the classroom or situations where he is getting bullied so that learning can continue in a positive way.
