The 5 Themes of Geography
Location
Knowing the general location of people/places is the start of geographic study
Knowing the location of gives geographers lots of about a city and the people who inhabit a the city
Absolute location is the longitude and latitude
Relative location is one place is location in relation to another place
Location is where someplace or something is located
Place
Each location has both pros and cons of where it is. For example Prince Rupert is in a mountainous area on the coast and has heavy rainfall, but also has abundant forests and access to the ocean
Visible results of human activity on the landscape is known as "Cultural Landscape"
The place is the physical characteristics of a location which include landforms,bodies of water, soil, and mineral deposits
Regions
Regions are used by geographers to organize information about different areas
Areas within a region have have common characteristics such as government, landforms, and/or climate
Basic unit of study or geography
Movement of people, ideas, and objects
Modern technology allows people to contact each other and spread ideas with each other at rapid speeds. This is known as globalization
Human/Environment Interaction
Humans change the landscape of the environment for their needs and wants, but at the same time humans depend on the environment to survive
Geographers are interested to see how humans actions can change the natural environment
