        Whitman was taken out of school at 11 to help with household income. He worked as an office boy for an attorney team in Brooklyn. He eventually moved to a job at a printing business.
        
        Whitman began to teach at 17 and worked in education for five years in Long Island. He didn't enjoy teaching, especially with rough conditions and circumstances he had to teach under.
        
        In 1841 he began to work to be a journalist. In 1846 he became the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and worked there for about two years.
        
        In 1848 Whitman moved to New Orleans and became the editor of the Crescent. He only stayed for three month, but saw slavery's evil.
        
        He went back to Brooklyn in autumn of 1848 and started the Brooklyn Freeman. The question of slavery rose over the years, eventually driving Whitman to start writing what would be seen as his poetry
