SOCIAL CLASS
- two classes,
Upper and Lower
Lower class had to work for a living - on the land
Upper class owned the land and had money.
Upper class

. :fox_face: These sports required a lot of money. :money_with_wings: The sports had rules as the upper class tend to be educated.

lower class
took part in
mob football

dogfighting

cockfighting
. :baby_chick: There was a prize for winning. These sports required little money and had no rules as the lower class were not educated.
GENDER
Women participated in very different sports to men. This is because they were seen as the
weaker sex
. Some activities were seen as
too dangerous
or
strenuous
for women.
Lower class
women took part in
smock races

Upper class
women took part in
archery

LAW AND ORDER
- little
formal
law and order and no police force.
Activities were often
violent

Police came about in 1829

Mob football had :soccer: few written rules - reflects society.
Bare knuckle fighting

animal baiting
are examples of violent sport.
EDUCATION AND LITERACY
- only upper class men were educated.

Lower class
were
illiterate
- activities were simple and unsophisticated.

AVAILABILITY OF TIME AND MONEY
Lower class
had long working hours so were very tired :zzz: after work. They had little interest in sport. Most of their activities held in the pub :beer: or on a bank holiday.
Upper class
had more time and money so would take part in sport more often. They could afford horses :horse: and equipment for their sports.
AVAILABILITY OF TRANSPORT
Transport was mostly by
horse and cart
.
Most activities were
local
due to the lack of transport. The roads were bad and the
lower class
could not afford to travel

upper class
could afford to travel.
