Pathophysiology
This build-up of organisms can cause odema, ischaemia, necrosis, inflammation and perforation
If the appendix ruptures it releases all of this bacteria into the peritoneum and means that there can be peritonitis. A fatal condition
This generally happens when the appendix becomes obstructed by filarial worms, faecolith or obstructed by lymphoid tissue. This means that gut pathogenic organisms can invade the appendix wall.

Define: this is when there is inflammation of the appendix. This is also known as the vermiform appendix that comes off of the sigmoid colon. This is normally due to faeces getting stuck in the appendix. As they are stagnant it means that the bacteria begin to replicate and builds up. The appendix can be found at McBurney's point
