Vocabulary
Equation: a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =) Example: x+1=4
Exponent: a quantity representing the power to which a given number or expression is to be raised, usually expressed as a raised symbol beside the number or expression. Example: 3 in 23 = 2 × 2 × 2
Expression: An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide) Example: 2x+3
-
Term: A term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Examples:
-
Slope
Numerical Form: When looking at slope in it's numerical form (m=__)
you will most likely see an equation. This would be
Graphical Form: Slope in its graphical form is when you see a line on a graph. When we first learned how to do slope we would "bunny hop" which means it would be up 1 over 2 for example.
Function notation is the way a function is written. It is meant to be a precise way of giving information about the function without a rather lengthy written explanation. The most popular function notation is f (x) which is read "f of x".

Maximums: The value of a function at a certain point in its domain, which is greater than or equal to the values at all other points in the immediate vicinity of the point.
-
-
Domain: The domain of a function is the complete set of possible values of the independent variable.

Green and blue functions are closed on either side of the function while the red on in the middle is open circle on either side
A piecewise-defined function is a function which is defined by multiple sub-functions, each sub-function applying to a certain interval of the main function's domain.
When shopping for groceries, there is a discount on bags of chips that originally cost $3. If you buy an additional bag of chips, you get $2 off the total cost of chips. For each additional bag of chips you buy, you get $2 off. The y intercept is 0 because if you don't buy any chips, you don't have to pay anything and you don't get a discount. y=-2x+3
A cars price goes down $500 for every 1,000 miles driven. A new jeep costs $24,000. Find out how much the worth of the car decreases if someone puts 30,000 miles on it. y=-500x+24,000
