cell division
the 4 stages that make up cell division are: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
PROPHASE: chromosomes condense and get shorter and fatter. tiny bundles of proteins called centrioles start moving to opposite ends of the cell, forming a network of proteins fibres across it called spindle fibres. the nuclear envelope breaks down.
METAPHASE:the chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell and become attached to the spindle by their centromere.
ANAPHASE: the chromatids divide, separating each pair of sister chromatids. the spindles contract, pulling chromatids to opposite poles of the spindle, centromere first. they appear v-shaped.
TELOPHASE: chromatids uncoil and become long and thin. they are now called chromosomes again. a nuclear envelope is formed around each group of chromosomes, so there are now two neclei. cytokinesis happens where the cytoplasm divides. there are now two daughtering cells and mitosis is finished.
