Incarnation
What is Incarnation?
Incarnate means being made of flesh. Jesus went through the whole human cycle. He was truly man and shows that God loves the human race; he can empathise with the human race.
God taking on the human condition in Jesus.
The sanctity of life; issues related to it
Issues related to the sanctity of life
Human beings murdering other human beings.
These people claim that God told them to do it.
For example, the Yorkshire Ripper claimed that God had told him to kill prostitutes.
Humans choose to torture each other.
Examples include things like hostage situations where innocent people are held hostage and are tortured for no reason; creates a sense of injustice.
Definition: All life is holy as it is created and loved by God; human life should not be misused or abused.
Christians/Catholics believe that all life is sacred.
Incarnation and religious art; Christian view
There are three Christian symbols that you need to be able to recognise and explain...
Ichthus (fish) - a symbol of a fish, based on a Greek acronym that translates as 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior'
Alpha and Omega - a symbol made from the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet; used to show that God and Jesus are eternal.
Chi-Rho - a symbol to represent Jesus, made up of the first two letters of his name in Greek.
Christ the Redeemer
It was built to challenge the godlessness of society at the time it was built.
Outstretched arms are a reminder of the cross on which Jesus accepted death.
Symbol of Jesus' love and obedience to God.
Shows that Jesus' love takes in all people, there is no one excluded from the love of God.
Reasons why Christians are against art: God is infinite and so cannot be depicted through art. Sometimes statues and images may be misleading the real image of Jesus/God; we don't know what Jesus really looked like.
Reasons why it is acceptable of the Incarnation: God took on human form. It helps people to focus on their spiritual life. It emphasises His humanity.
Titles given to Jesus; Son of God/Son of Man/Messiah/Saviour
Son of Man
Only used by Jesus himself.
Used to equate himself to humanity.

Use of music in worship

Four different parts of celebration...
The Gloria - a great hymn of praise to God, it conveys a feeling of thankfullness to God for all his love and care.
Alleluia - the Hebrew word that means 'praise to God' and introduces the Gospel.
The word 'sanctus' is Latin for 'holy'; it is sung just before the Eucharistic prayer. Shows that God is completely holy and also ‘holy’ is repeated here times, reflecting the idea of the Holy Spirit.
The Mystery of Faith - immediately after the consecration; people acclaim the mystery of Faith.
Different Types of music
Traditional Hymns-well known, popular in weekly mass.
Contemporary Worship Songs-modern instruments and lyrics. Some people don't agree with this type of music as it could be classed as disrespectful and a distraction from worship/God.

'When a person prays, he enters a relationship with God' - Youcat 469
Trinity in the Bible
In the New Testament, there are so many references to the Father, the Son and the Spirit. Even when the words 'Triune God' and 'Trinity' are not explicity used, there is clear reference throughout the New Testament to the work of the Trinity.
Examples of this are in the accounts of the baptism of Jesus and in Paul's letter to the Galatians.
Jesus' Baptism - the Father, Son and Spirit were present, showing that the work done by Jesus was the work of God.
