Five Phase Visual Design Model
Define Instructional Goals
What are the expected end results?
To educate, enlighten or incite
• Usually high profile
• Must be masterful in content
To develop operational skills and explain:
• Lower budgets, less visible
• Focus on accurate and effective content
To strengthen principle-based or problem-solving skills:
Building of principle-based knowledge = Far transfer skills
• Involve problem solving and judgement
Building of procedural knowledge = Near-transfer skills
• Perform tasks in a consistent manner
Determine the Visual Context
Define the Audience
Do they have prior knowledge?
What are the age groups, education levels or culture?
Delivery Medium
Paper stock, pamphlets, whiteboard, etc:
• Paper weight
• Laminate
Computers, smart phones tablets
• What platform (Apple, Android, PC)
• What operating system and version
• What browser and version
• Internet connection speeds
Constraints
Budgets & finances
Time tables
Corporate styling
Determine the Physical Surroundings
Any special considerations for the learners:
• Use of gloves, masks, or other uniform items
• Cleanliness of the area
Is it a classroom, warehouse, breakroom, etc.?
Design the Visual Approach
What images will be used
How will the images, colors and text work together
Consider:
• The instructional methods that will be used
• Ease of use for online content
• The surface features that support the context and goals
• The layout, or "look and feel" of the project (style, orientation, real estate)
Identify Communication Function of Visuals to Match Content Types
Five Content Types
Process
• Transformational Images - reference steps needed to complete a task
Concept
• Representational Images - display realistic content
• Interpretive Images - aid in understanding of invisible or abstract processes
Principles
• Relational Images - show relationships between variables (graphs & charts)
• Interpretive Images - aid in understanding abstract processes
• Transformational - show change over time (animations)
Procedures
• Representational Images - show content realistically
• Transformational Images - show change over time or space
Facts
• Representational Images - realistic representation of content
• Mnemonic Images - visual aids that help with recall
Apply Principles of Psychological Instructional Events to Visual Design Decisions
Use methods that activate prior learned things and aid in new learning.
Mental model principles
Used for developing far-transfer skills
Transfer principles
Used for developing near-transfer skills
Attention & cognitive load principles
Used for complex materials and new users
Motivational visual principles
Used to engage the disinterested
