overabundance of bronchial secretions

slowing of mucous clearing cilia
ARDS
non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema "leaky alveoli"
Intermediate stage: 2-5 days after inhalation
Upper airway improves, deep in the lungs still a problem
necrotic mucosa sloughs off
mucous plugging
atelectasis
bacterial colonization
bronchitis
pneumonia
Late stage: >5 days
infections major concern

MODS (multi-organ dysfunction syndrome)
