Reading Map 2from Simonson, M., Smaldino, S., and Zvacek, S. (2014). Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations of Distance Education, 6th Edition. Information Age Publishing.
Reflection: The authors point out the importance of what is communicated to the student and how the information is communicated. This echoes the idea that we shouldn't just keep chasing the newest technology but instead be more careful in designing the instructional environment to optimize student learning. This process is illustrated in four steps (Simonson, 2014). Interestingly, since the book is over three years old, many of the technologies described as cutting edge or state of the art have already been either rendered obsolete or supplanted by newer versions of technologies. It is almost comical to note some of the clunky large display monitors with huge video cameras on top. In many distance education settings, smartboards and Mondopads have replaced these.
Quote: "Classroom Technologies for Online Instruction The key to success in an online classroom is not which technologies are used, but how they are used and what information is communicated using the technologies" (Simonson et al, pp.98 2014).
