readily spreads from person to person, mainly through respiratory secretions and by direct contact w/ virus in skin lesions. incubation period of 7-17 days, usual presenting manifestations: high fever, headache, and backache, followed by a rash, which first appears on mucosa of mouth and pharynx, face, and forearms and spreads to trunk and egs; rash initially is vesicular and later becomes pustular. Bc affected are contagious during incubation period, can rapidly spread throughout an unprotected population
