Old Testament
deals with the ways God related with the Jews throughout their history, before the coming of Jesus
describes how God guided the Jews, protecting them and sending the prophets to warn them when they were going wrong
contains
the Law (Torah) - first 5 books, show how Jews became people of God, and the Ten Commandments

the Wisdom books - includes prayers, psalms, books of advice and poems
show people how to use God given talents to do what is right, in order to stay close to God
the Prophets - contain words from inspiring figures, sent by God to teach how God is active in the world + to challenge people to stay faithful to God
between middle of second century BCE and end of first century CE, Jewish leaders accepted these books as part of their scriptures
New Testament

divided into 4 sections
the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) - record actions + teachings of Jesus
the Acts of the Apostles (continuation of Gospel of Luke) - tell of events in early Church up to 60CE
the Epistles (letters) - show Christians how to live by Jesus' teachings + what it means to be Christian
the Book of Revelation - written by John, contains his own visions
