        While not voicing a distinct opinion, or trying to make the audience feel guilty, instead he imply forces the audience to actually consider how their actions affect another creature. Any guilt that arises from reading this article comes from within the reader. #
      - The Lives of Animals:
        In this piece, Elizabeth Costello argues that eating meat is extremely unethical, as it requires the killing of so many animals. She makes several very controversial comparisons between factory farms and the nazi death camps. Her main argument is that the killing of animals is as indefensible as the killing of humans. Brings up many questions about morality and values of our society. If all human lives are so valuable, why do we view the lives of animals to be so different? Why does a lack of intelligence or consciousness make a life less valuable. Since humans do not need to eat meat to survive, how can we justify killing animals simply for pleasure. It is this needless killing that is played off of several times throughout the story. While she does not rely on practical or scientific evidence to suggest that sting meat is bad, she makes a purely emotional appeal to her audience. The human consciousness is powerful enough that we should be able to empathize with all animals. If this is the case, then the only thing keeping the meat industry alive is our refusal to acknowledge it.
