Chapter 20: Climates
-
Natural Regions: A natural region is where climate, natural vegetation, wildlife and human activities are similar.
The temperate climates are found in the mid-latitudes
- Cool temperate oceanic climate (Ireland's climate)
- Warm temperate oceanic climate (Mediterranean climate)
The cold climate zones are found close to the poles
- Boreal Climate
- Tunda Climate
BOREAL CLIMATE
-
-
-
-
-
Location
- The boreal climate is found north of the cool temperate maritime climatic zone.
- It is found between 55' north of the equator and the arctic circle.
-
The hot climate zones are found close to the equator.
- Equatorial Climate
- Hot Desert Climate
- Savannah Climate
HOT CLIMATE
Location:
- Found between 15' and 30' north and south of the equator situated around the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer
- An example would be the Sahara Desert in Africa
Natural Vegetation:
- There is very little vegetation in the desert. Some plants have tap roots to reach deep water sources. Some have short life cycle that have seed that stay dormant till it rains.
- The cactus has tap roots and a fleshy inside to store water. They have a waxy coat to prevent moisture loss and sharp spines to protect against animals
Wildlife
- Some animals have adapted to live in the desert by being cold blooded or being nocturnal
- Camels store fat in their humps so they have food when it runs out. They have long eyelashes and nostrils that close to keep sand out. They have wide hooves to walk on land and thick lips to eat cati
Soil:
- Desert soils tend to be quite coarse, light coloured and rich in minerals. There is very little organic matter as there is little vegetation.
- An oasis is a fertile patch of land in a desert when plants can grow.
Rainfall:
- Deserts have less than 250mm of rainfall a year. This is because the deserts may be in a rain shadow.
- Evaporation is so high because of the heat.
Human Activity:
- Human activity is so limited because the climate is so harsh.
- Human activity can be negative and can cause desertification.
Temperature:
- During the day the temperature can reach 50' and can drop as low as 0' at night because there are no cloud to keep the heat in.
- The daily temperature range is very large. This is known as a diurnal temperature range
