Digestive Enzymes
Salivary Amylase- secreted by the salivary glands into the mouth, it is responsible for the initial chemical digestion of starch into oliogosaccharides.
Lipase- secreted by the brush border enzymes of the duodenum, it is responsible for the digestion of lipids into glycerol and fatty acids.
Pepsin- secreted by chief cells in the stomach, it is responsible for the initial digestion of protein into polypeptides.
Trypsin- secreted by the pancreas into the duodeum of the small intestine, it is responsible for further digestion of proteins, in the form of polypeptides into smaller peptide chains.
Chymotrypsin- secreted from the pancreas, function in the break down of polypeptides and peptides in the small intestine
Carboxypeptidase- secreted from the pancreas, functions in the breakdown of polypeptides and peptides in the small intestine.
Pancreatic Amylase- secreted by the pancreas into the duodenum of the small intestine, it is responsible for the chemical digestion of Carbohydrates, in the form of oligosaccharides into maltose.
Nucleosidases- secreted by the brush border enzymes in the duodenum, it is responsible for digesting nucleotides into a nucleic base, sugar and a phosphate group.
Peptidase- secreted by the brush border enzymes of the duodenum, it is responsible for the final chemical digestion of proteins, in the form of small peptides, into amino acids.
Maltase- secreted by the brush border enzymes in the duodenum, it is responsible for the chemical digestion of carbs, in the form of maltose, into glucose.
Nuclease- secreted by the pancreas into the duodenum, it is responsible for the break down of nucleic acids into nucleotides
Enteropeptidase- activates the enzymes released by the pancreas, so that they can continue the break down of protein.
Dipeptidase breaks the final bond between two amino acids of a dipeptide so that they can be absorbed.
