Student Assessments
Self-Assessment
-
These assessments are FOR learning because it allows teachers to see where students think they understand but might not.
Advantages: Low stress and can be fairly easy to set up. They are also fairly low-commitment.
Disadvantages are that they are not always accurate or fair. They are also difficult to balance for all students
-
Summative Assessments
The focus is on the outcome of a program. Evaluate student learning at the end of a unit by comparing it to a standard or benchmark.
This assessment is OF learning. It is at the end of the unit and there is not adjustment with regard to the results.
Advantages: This type of assessment determines to what degree the students learned the lesson. It is also evaluative rather than diagnostic. It measures progress.
Disadvantages: This type of assessment is not always accurate. They do not always remedy instructional deficiencies. They also increase stress and anxiety.
Example: A unit test over everything covered in the unit. A cumulative final exam would also be an example.
Diagnostic Assessments
Pre-assessment that determines students' individual strengths and weaknesses prior to instruction. Used for diagnosing difficulties and for curriculum planning.
Advantages: establishes a baseline for the class. Allows for better differentiation. Provides a frame of reference for later assessments.
-
-
Example: A vocabulary pretest given at the beginning of the semester or unit to see how many words the students understand before you start using them regularly.
Formative Assessments
Including diagnostic testing, it is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment. It is a check for understanding during the lesson.
Advantages: It's not graded so there is no pressure. There is less reteaching at the end. Any issues are addressed early.
Disadvantages are that it is time consuming, and because it is not graded students may not take it seriously.
This assessment is FOR learning because it allows for modification to instruction before the lesson is considered complete.
Example: Ask students to choose the best thesis statement from a selection. If they choose correctly, I move on. If only some do, I'll do a class discussion. If most are wrong, I will review the work on thesis statements.
-
High Stakes Assessment
Any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, or districts, most commonly for the purpose of accountability is a high stakes test.
This assessment could be OF or FOR learning, but I think it is mostly of learning because it is usually at the end of the lesson and tests knowledge.
Advantages: This assessment has a wide range for results. It also holds teachers accountable and has easily understandable results.
Disadvantages: there is a lot of stress caused by the pressure of these tests. There is an increased risk of cheating and it decreases the quality of teaching.
Examples: The ACT, the EOCs, an AP exam
Portfolio Assessment
Assessment form that learners do with their instructors. It contains samples of the learner's work and shows growth over time.
-
Advantages: it allows for self-evaluation. It also is more individualized and increases accountability of both instructors and students.
Disadvantages: It is more time consuming and is less reliable than other methods of assessment. It also is less fair because there is less consistency.
Example: A folio containing the best examples of all the different types of a student's writing (persuasive, creative, informative, and summative).
Authentic Assessments
measurement of intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful. It can be devised by the teacher or in collaboration with the student by engaging student voice.
Advantages: real life tasks are relevant and increase student engagement. They also focus on analytical skills.
Disadvantages: are that they are difficult to set up and difficult to administer.
