Changing sounds
Sounds are produced by vibrating objects
Bigger vibrations causes louder sounds
Faster/more frequent vibrations give sounds of higher pitch
Looking at vibrations
The amplitude of a vibration is the greatest distance the object moves from its rest position.
Frequency is the number of vibrations per second.
Frequency is measured in hertz.
How sound travels
Sounds needs a material to travel through. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum.
Sound travels when particles push each other back and forth. This is a sound wave. :check:
Sounds on a screen
An oscilloscope can be used to display traces representing sound waves.
Louder sounds have waves with a greater amplitude.
High-pitched sounds have waves squashed more closely together.
How we hear :explode:
Our ears convert sound waves into nerve signals to the brain.
Young people can usually hear sounds whose frequencies lie between 20 Hz and 20 000 Hz.
Loud sounds can damage our hearing.
