Assessments
Diagnostic
What is it - process of questioning, testing, or demonstration used to identify how a student is learning, where his strengths and weaknesses lie, and potential strategies to improve that learning. It focuses on individual growth.
Purpose - To diagnose problems in students’ understanding or gaps in skills, and to help teachers decide next steps in instruction.
-
Formative
What is it - The process of teaching students how to set goals for their learning, to identify their growth towards those goals, to evaluate the quality of their work, and to identify strategies to improve.
Purpose - Reflect on understanding, internalize and analyze learning goals, and evaluate the quality of work they are producing
Advantages - Allows students and teachers to check for understanding, doesn't create test anxiety.
-
Summative
What is it - comparison of the performance of a student or group of students against a set of uniform standards.
Purpose - To give an overall description of students’ status and evaluate the effectiveness of the educational environment
-
-
High Stakes
What is it - any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, or districts, most commonly for the purpose of accountability
Purpose - to make sure schools are effective in created learning environment and that teachers are effective in teaching material expected to be covered
-
-
Authentic
What is it - an approach to measure student performance in a direct, relevant way to see if the learning objectives were met
Purpose - to enhance the learning process and help students gain knowledge while completing tasks that are beneficial to their “real-world” experiences.
Advantages - Allows students an opportunity to show what they have learned in class in a format that is not a test or quiz
Disadvantages - For math students, math involves understanding steps and processes of solving specific problems so this may not be an accurate reflection of learning in a unit
Example - students use systems of linear equations to come up with a real world application for a problem that needs to be solved and solve the system of equations
Assessment for learning - Students are able to gauge understanding of material with ability to complete the project and reflect on ones learning
