Deep Overbite
Etiology
-
-
Dental
-
-
Overeruption of incisor teeth, infraocclusion of buccal segment or combination
-
-
-
Muscular
posterior vertical chain of muscles is strong and anteriorly positioned, greater depressive action transmitted to dentition
-
-
-
Features
Extraoral
-
-
-
-
-
Lips are thin with excess of lip height, curled appearance
-
-
-
Intraoral
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Maxillary incisors tipped lingually, Class II div 2
-
-
Condition of excessive overbite, where the vertical measurement between maxillary and mandibular incisal margins is excessive when mandible is brought into habitual centric occlusion
-
Dental Deep Bite
- Overeruption of anteriors or infra-occlusion of molar
- Absence of any skeletal complicating features
- deep curve of Spee or reverse curve of Spee
- TMJ dysfuction and limited range of functional occlusal movements
Skeletal Deep Bite
- Malrelationship of alveolar bones/underlying bones
- Overgrowth/undergrowht of one/more alveolar segments
- Diminished (lower) anterior vertical height
- Class II div 2, Class III
True Deep Bite
- Infraocclusion of posterior
- Class II div 2
- Lateral tongue thrust
- Flat curve of Spee
- Large interocclusal clearance
- Adequate lip line relationships
- Functional appliance therapy
- Extrusive mechanics - molars
Pseudo-Deep Bite
- Overeruption of anterior
- Class II div 1
- Increased overjet, lower incisors overerupt until they meet palatal mucosa
- Excessive curve of Spee
- Interocclusal clearance normal or small
- Gummy smile and poor lip line
- Cannot use functional method
- Intrusive mechanics - incisors
