During colonial period, African slaves used spoken word as a way to mantain their identity within institutions of slavery. This practice was re-born around African- American folks as the Civil Rights movement took off. This time, African Americans used spoken word in order to defy the status quo as well as establish a shared sense of identity and honor their roots. (AM)
