March- Congress established Freedmen's Bureau to assist former slaves.
Summer- White governments in restored southern states adopt Black Codes restricting freed people's rights.
December- Thirteenth amendment is ratified, outlawing slavery in the U.S. Ku Klux Klan is organized in Tennessee to terrorize freed black people.
1866
Civil rights act extends citizenship and accompanying rights to all all persons born in the U.S. including African Americans.
1868
July- Fourteenth Amendment gives citizenship to African Americans and establishes birthright citizenship as U.S. policy.
