      - art is pretending to be reality
      - art should reflect reality (which then mostly occurred up until the 20th century)
- - - - found illusory contours produce the same neural response as actual contours
      - contour: an outline representing or bounding the shape or form of something.
    - - good figure: every stimulus pattern is perceived in such a way that the resulting structure is as simple as possible eg seeing the olympic logo as full circles when they're all actually split 1/2 times
      - Similarity: similar things seem grouped together eg in dance with same movements
      - good continuation: points theat, when connected, result in a straight or smoothly curving line are seen as belonging together. lines tend to be seen in the way that follows the smoothest path eg with random dots you pick out connections that look like a line
      - proximity or nearness: things that are near each other tend to look grouped together eg adidas logo
      - connectedness: things that are physically connected are perceived as a unit
      - common fate and synchrony: things that are moving in the same direction appear to belong together
      - familiarity: things are more likely to form groups if the groups appear familiar or meaningful eg faces
