Otherness Red Peter, formerly an ape, was taught to become a human, which leaves his otherness only in where he came from and memories of his apehood. Red Peter says, "Your own apehood, gentlemen, to the extent that there is anything like that in your past, cannot be more remote from you than mine is from me" (Kafka, 81). However, because of his past, people still view him as something "other" than them.
