The 7 Deadly Sins
GLUTTONY
Marlowe's language suggests Faustus is guilty of metaphorical gluttony - " Glutted more with learning's golden gifts... glutted with the conceit of this"
After the parade of the seven deadly sins Faustus claims " O this feeds my soul" an effective metaphor for eating.
-
PRIDE
Faustus has pride in his ambition to become a God - " try thy brains to gain a deity" This is the same pride which made Lucifer fall as Mephistopheles answers to Faustus' question on how he fell " O, by aspiring pride and insolence/For which God threw him from the face of heaven"
-
Considered to be the most serious as it actively questions his/her position in the Great Chain of Being.
Great Chain of Being - a strict hierarchical structure of all matter and life, thought in medieval Christianity to have been decreed by God.
Faustus tries to break out of the hierarchy as he came from a poor background but ends up being a scholar.
COVETOUSNESS
Faustus is driven by greed and ambition, as he tries to satisfy his appetite for knowledge and power. This is also shown in the manner that he treats the emperor (obsequiousness) - serious acknowledgement and following.
-
ENVY
Faustus is envious of the fact that he doesn't know all about the world and universe like God, and indeed he wishes to become a "mighty God"
-
-
WRATH
Faustus presents wrath on many occasions when he doesn't get his way:
"When I behold the heavens, then I repent/ And curse thee, wicked Mephistopheles,/because thou hast deprived me of those joys."
Even in Act 2, scene 3 when Faustus tried to demand deeper knowledge form Mephistopheles, who is unable to answer. Faustus repeats "tell me" and insults Mephistopheles by saying
"Hath Mephistopheles no greater skill"
" The sin of wrath also encompassed anger against oneself leading to self harm"
SLOTH
Does Faustus also implicitly show sloth as he orders Mephistopheles to his services and does not hunt for knowledge himself
