Traditional Music
- "Song of Rejoicing after Returning from a Hunt" - recorded by same group as "Hindewhu Solo", vocal line is 4 phrases of 3 beats each, has handclaps, solo voice, and 2 whistles
- "Hindewhu Solo" - BaBenzele Pygmies, Central Africa Republic, singing & blowing into whistle, whistle made from a hollow twig of a papaya tree, 3 phrases of equal length forming 1 cycle.
- “Nhemamusasa” by Beauler Dyoko (female mbira player) and Cosmas Magaya - hosho player keeps ternary (triplet) beat, same piece as #6, but in a full performance with vocals. Vocal styles: huro (high yodeling), mahon'era (low riffing), and kudeketera (poetry)
- "Kalagala Ebwembe" by Hugh Tracey at the Buganda court in 1952, amadinda - 3 musicians - omunazi, omwawuzi & omukoonezi, no improv allowed
- "Mbube" by Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds - original 1939 recording, Zulu people, genre: "isicathamiya", meaning "step lightly", 1 soprano 1 alto 1 tenor & many basses for a "booming sound".
- "Moussolou" by Oumou Sangare - hunter's harp called donso ngoni, Wasulu region of Southern Mali, opens with violin and kamalengoni answers, then guitar and karinya (scraper) enter, female chorus enters then Sangare sings
- "El Ward Gamil" by Umm Kulthum - from the film "Fatma", most well known Arab singer in 20th century, melismatic style, uses poetry with tarab ("enchantment"), orchestra and singing.
- "Konkoba" by Toumani Diabate - from 1st album "Kaira", music of jelis, kora playing, played with 2 thumbs & 2 index finders allowing for 4 lines, music of Mande peoples in Mali
- "Nhemamusasa" by Cosmas, Alexia, and Simon Magaya - Shona mbira (metal prongs attached to wooden sound box), starts with kushaura (lead part) and then has melodic lines at 3 pitch levels.
