Music Video Forms

Narrative based

Narrative music videos contain a relatively simple story that extends the meaning or even adds a new meaning to the song and lyrics.

Purely narrative music videos are not as common as hybrid performance/narrative or conceptual/narrative videos but with the more recent trend of music videos becoming a big 'event' almost purely narrative videos that have a big screen movie feel to them are becoming more popular

Performance based

Performance music videos contain shots of the artist singing or playing an instrument and/or dance choreography

Pure performance videos are rare as it is hard to keep the audience interested in a performance for that long and so have to be very visually interesting and show development throughout. This is why conceptual performance videos with high levels of symbolism or narrative/performance videos are more common as they break the video up and offer more variation for the audience

Conceptual based

Conceptual videos rely heavily on symbolism and abstract imagery to create a 'world' with multiple readings by the audience, often with a wider message about society or the artist and their beliefs.

High concept narrative music videos are very popular as thy create an immersive fantasy world for the audience to become lost in.
