Teleological Argument
-
Paley (18th century)
Watch anaolgy
Rock/watch - if you found a rock you could see it had been there forever. If you found a watch you could see it has a purpose and know it was designed by a watchmaker

Paley vs Hume
Hume: the watch is mechanic, no morals involved. The world is different. It is not orderly, there is disease, murder, pain destruction
-
Hume: we have no experience of the universe, we cannot compare it to things such as a watch or a house. We assume cause and effect because we witness it.
-
Hume: it doesn't prove a God - could have been demons, multiple Gods, etc
-
Hume: we cannot assume that our universe is complex because we cannot compare it to any other universes
Paley: As the universe is so complex in design, there must be a complex intelligence
John Stuart Mill

The Problem of Evil - the universe shows only a cruel or incompetent, flawed designer
The universe is unjust, each person's suffering or happiness would be directly proportional to their good or evil deeds.
-
Dawkins 1941-
"no design, no purpose, no evil and no good: nothing but blind pitless indifference."

The Teleological argument refers to the arguments for God's existence which work by looking at things in the universe and trying to show they were designed
