great lake bedrock: sedimentary rocks, limestone, shales, sandstone. some parts are igneous/metamorphic resulting in irregular structure
proglacial lakes
forms as the glacier is retreating
usually forms behind the moraine (the moraine acts as a barrier stopping the lake from overtopping)
end moraines are trapping the lake.

global warming leads to increased melting
proglacial lake forms then a mega flood occurs
meltwater is now in the north atlantic meaning it becomes less saline so it does not sink
skiddaw group: mainly slates - metamorphic rock originally derived from mudstone and shale. not resistant to weathering and erosions due to fine grains and homogenous. so form a scenery of rounded mountains
windermere group: sedimentary rocks (mudstones) least resistant to weathering and erosions so form a scenery of gentler foothills
borrowdale volcanics: igneous rocks, most resistant to erosion and weathering due to their dense interlocking crystals, but tend to be well jointed so can be weakened by pressure release. have a rugged topography - highest and craggiest mountains e.g. skyfell and helvellyn

moraine ridges are in the valley - have patches in the landscape called hummocky moraine
present day: vegetation has claimed most of the landscape, so it may be difficult to identify
