Figure of pity and interest for Kathy
They develop a close friendship
Tommy confides in Kathy which shows he trusts her
At Hailsham, he struggles with art.
Initially Miss Lucy tells him it's ok not to be creative
However when she changes his mind this causes him distress showing he feels he needs to become more creative to feel important.
