John's downfall
1205-16
-
magna carta, the First Baron's War and the problem of succession
-
-
disputes with the Pope
July 1205 Hubert Walter, Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor dies
why was he good
he was a skilled administrator and advise, helped rule England while Richard & John had been out of the country
John wanted John de Gray to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury because it was important to have a good, working relationship with the Archbishop of Canterbury
-
June 1207 - John wrote to Pope Innocent III informing him that John de Gray would be the new Archbishop of canterbury
Pope Innocent III wanted Stephen Langton to be Archbishop of Canterbury because they had studied together at the university of Paris and formed a strong relationship
-
consequence 1
1208 the Pope declared an interdict which meant
-ending of church services
-hard to baptise infants and bury dead in churchyards
not everyone followed the interdict - most clergy and many monks were on John's side. Only two bishops remained in England and the rest went overseas: John de Gray & Peter of Winchester stayed
-
consequence 3
January 1209 Innocent III threatened John with excommunication if he did not appoint Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury in 3 months
This would place John outside of the church and he would no longer have the Pope's support or protection.
November 1209 John was excommunicated. He didn't seem to be troubled by this and continued to take church lands, gaining an extra £65000 for his treasury to boost his war funds. He also didn't lose support of the people of England
consequence 4
May 1213 John agreed Stephen Langton could be Archbishop of Canterbury and even agreed Pope Innocent III should be his overlord
May 1213 French fleet surprised by English fleet and destroyed; Philip had been planning an invasion
June 1213 John ordered all church lands to that had been seized in the King's name should be returned
