Richard in the Holy Land
Fall of Acre - July 1190

Acre surrendered and Phillip returned to France because he and Richard argued about Cyprus and king of Jerusalem. also the count of Flanders died and Phillip wanted to take land
Richard negotiated the release of Muslim soldiers if Saladin paid 200 000 gold coins, released Christian Prisoners and handed over siege weapons and the True Cross. Saladin didn't do this.
Richard believed Saladin was stalling and on 20th August his men to 2700 Muslim prisoners to near Saladin's camp and executed them
March to Jaffa
Richards forces marched close to the sea so they where protected by the fleet on one side and the other by archers and infantry
the fleet also supplied the troops with food, rest and water. despite attacks the crusaders held formation
Battle of Arsuf
Saladin realised the only way to stop the crusaders reaching Jaffa would be battle. on 7th September 30 000 men attacked the crusaders on the plain of Arsuf
Richard led a charge against Saladin's men and they won, Saladin's men retreated and they carried on to Jaffa
Attacks on Jerusalem

By June the weather had improved and Crusaders marched to Beit Nuba in days rather than months. however it was hot and Saladin had poisoned the Wells so they retreated again

thousands of Christians went to the holy land to win it back, many Muslims and Jews where killed

in 1144, Muslim forces took back control of parts of Edessa, this led to the second crusade.
