Outbreak of war with Austria in April 1792 prevented the survival of the 1791 Constitution, and probably had the most far-reaching consequences of any other event in terms of radically transforming the state of the Revolution.

The Revolutionary War was declared by France on the 20th April 1792, hoping to fight solely against Austria - but then Prussia declared war a month later.
The royal family was suspected of not being wholly committed to a French victory - suspicions perhaps justified by the revelation of the armoire de fer - and some of Louis' actions were seen as being hostile to the Revolution, further engendering the Republican mood at the time and making his political opponents all the more determined to overthrow the monarchy.
