The UK's evolving physical landscape
Waves
Destructive Waves
Backwash is much stronger than swash
Usually 10 -15 per minute
Create a steep, narrow beach
Create an erosional landform
Constructive Waves
Creates a depositional landform
Swash is stronger that the backwash
6-9 per minute
Creates a wide, gently sloping beach
Factors
Wind speed
Fetch
Wind Duration
Definitions
Fetch : THe size of open water that the wave has be able to form on
Swash : When a wave breaks, water is washed up the beach
Backwash : When the water runs back down the beach
Rocks
Igneous
Formed when molten magma or lava cools slowly. This forms crystals. The crystals are larger if the rock cools more slowly
Granite
Obsidian
Sedimentary
Formed when rocks which have been weathered, eroded and deposited on the sea-bed are cemented and compacted to form new rocks.
Limestone
Sandstone
Metamorphic
Igneous or sandstone rocks undergo a change when they get pushed down under continental plates. The heat and pressure changes them into new rocks.
