Problem Of Evil
Augustine
The fall causes us to possess original sin, we therefore deserve suffering and evil from God. Originally, God created the world to be perfect. God himself therefore is not responsible for creating evil , the responsibility lies with Adam & Eve
Evil does not exist, it is a 'privation' - the absence of something that is good. ''All which is corrupted is deprived of good''
Augustine is being illogical. A ''Perfect world gone wrong'' does not make complete sense, as if it were truly perfect like he claims, it seems why would it go wrong. It suggests Gods design was flawed (Platying down his omnipotence)
If God was omniscient he would've seen privation before it came into the world. Even if he was not directly responsible for creating evil he would have anticipated it in the first place
Augustine is downplaying the role of evil by claiming that it does not really exist. You might argue he doesnt understand the meaning.
Alvin claims people are not taking into account the full nature of free will, it would be impossibe to create us with all that freedom without the possibility of also creating evil. Humans themselves are free and therefore the responsibility lies with them (Does not explain Natural evil!). It is logically impossible to create a being that had full free will that can only perform good. If you are only able to do one thing and dont have the ability to choose something else for yourself it is not really free will.
If humans had the ability to sin they could only ever be finitely perfect, therefore some responsibility must lie with God.
Logical Problem Of Evil
Inconsistent Triad - God is supposed to be Omnipotent (all powerful) Omnibenevolent (All loving) and Omniscient (All Knowing). These three ideas can not be placed together when we take into account evil and suffering
-
Contradiction - not all three beliefs can be true at the same time. An all knowing God must be aware of evil in the world, if he was all powerful , he would have the ability to prevent evil, if he was all loving, he would want to stop evil - however, he doesn't.
