Malignancy
• Especially lung, brain, lymphoma, gyn, GI, or very widespread cancer
• Chemo and surgical treatment further increase the risk

Pregnancy
• Obstruction of venous return by the enlarged uterus and hypercoagulable state
• Even higher risk with twins, older maternal age, other medical illnesses during pregnancy
Surgery in the past 3 months
• Especially orthopedic, major vascular, neurosurgery, cancer surgery

Hospital admission in the past 3 months
• Ex: infection, erythropoiesis stimulating agents, blood transfusion, surgery, fractures, immobility, chemo
