DEFINITION:
A high-stakes test is a test with important consequences for the test taker.
PURPOSES:
A high-stakes test is any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, or districts, most commonly for the purpose of accountability—i.e., the attempt by federal, state, or local government agencies and school administrators to ensure that students are enrolled in effective schools.
Advantages:
This can be a great tool to measure a student's academic level and ability to place them in the right area or to measure for college readiness.
Disadvantages:
Some schools will only high stakes test on certain subjects and some states on all subjects. There is no standard and this can be hard for any student or teacher who may be transitioning to a different school.
"OF" learning as this is used as an assessment for the student's comprehension and usually graded either on a curve, scale or total score. This is not "for" because it does not allow for teachers to assess for learning or changing lesson plans.
