        Further, they are broken down into units that are fairly equal to a semester/course credit typically offered using 15 50-minute classes (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
    - - Unit, Module, Topic Guideline:
        
        Each semester credit = 1 unit; each unit = 3-5 modules; each module = 3-5 topics (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015, p. 154).
        
        A unit is a body of knowledge representative of a major subdivision of a class's content. Typically, one unit represents 4 or 5 weeks of instruction and is equal to a semester credit (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Major subdivisions of units are called modules. Modules are specific components of units (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Topics are main ideas that help to explain, clarify, or support a specific module (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
      - Typically, courses have 3 units, 12 modules, and 48 topics (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
- - - - Modules are typically presented to students in three to five topics and are presented through the following:
        
        A variety of audio recordings including speeches and other presentations provided via CD (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Presentations can be recorded into PowerPoint presentations that include prerecorded audio (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Videos provided to students on CDs, DVDs, or through streaming (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Content experts can engage students in synchronous chats (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
        
        Textbook readings or other print material (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
- - - - Most courses meet 3 hours per week for a total of 15 weeks. Traditionally, students spend six hours per week outside of class doing their homework, reading materials, finishing assignments or tasks, and watching class materials (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015).
