Initial Selection

Jurors are sent a summons by post specifiying a date and court and they have 7 days to reply or could face a £1,000 fine.
Jury service typically lasts for 2 weeks (10 working days) however a Juror can be asked to sit for longer.

Disqualification
People are disqualified can’t serve this includes:
- people on bail
- if they have been sentenced to 5+ years imprisonment (disqualified for life) or if sentenced to less than 5 years or community service (disqualified for 10 years).
- persons registered under the Mental Health Act 1983 can serve only if they are no longer recieving treatment, Mental Health (discrimination) Act 2013
Deferral & Excusal
If good reason can be shown e.g Pregnancy, holiday etc a person can ask for a deferral for 12 months.
Around 27% of people still avoid jury service each year meaning it is not truly representative of society
Also possible to ask for an excusal (not do it at all) if a person can show reasons why they cannot serve within in the next 12 months e.g long term illness. Military service etc.
Discharge at Court
A juror can be discharged at court by the judge for insufficient understanding of English or Physical disability e.g deaf/ blind or those who wouldn’t be able to perform the role effectively (Banks)

Selection at Court

15 jurors are selected at random for each case. 12 are randomly selected by ballot and are seated in the jury box 3 are held in reserve in case of conflict of interest or a juror discharged by the judge.

Vetting
Vetting is the process of conducting background checks on Jurors there are 2 types:
- Checks against criminal records (standard practise against every juror)
- Checks in national security cases or terrorist cases this is lesson common and requires Attorney General’s approval.
