LEARNING THEORY : GESTALT PRINCIPLES
Gestalt Psychology
A theory of mind and brain - operational principle of the brain is holistic, parallel & analogue
Comes with self-organizing tendencies, the whole is different from the sum of its parts
Form-forming capability of our senses, particularly with respect to the visual recognition of figures & whole forms instead of just a collection of simple lines & curves
Gestalt's Laws
Similarity
Items that are similar tend to be grouped together
Figure
Identify objects as distinct from their background
Dependent upon contrast
Varying degrees of contrast can detract/enhance legibility
Closure
Visually close gaps in a form, especially in familiar forms
Focus on what is present
Ignore the missing parts
FIll in the gaps with a familiar, line/tone/pattern to complete the form
Good form/Pragnanz Law
Reality is organized/reduced to the simplest form possible
Continuity
Objects will be grouped as a whole if they are co-linear/follow direction
Proximity
Items that are spatially located near to each other seem part of a group, items that are apart perceived as separate
Applications
To perform specific, task-dependent image processing
To build computational models mimicking human neural processes
To build successful 'artificial' visual cognition system
To help further our understanding of 'organic' visual cognition
