How did NGOs help
British red cross, Oxfam etc. helped
delivered clean water to 300,000 people living in camps in Port-au-Prince
massive hygiene program- built 1300 latrines- serving 250,000
provided medical supplies to main hospitals in St Marc in the affected areas
treated 18,700 cases of cholera in treatment units
raised awareness among local people on how to avoid infection and characteristics symptoms of cholera
Volunteers went from door to door informing people how to keep themselves safe
local radio, newspapers and other media were also used to reach as many people as possible
the cholera outbreak was brought under control
2011- 35,000 new cases a month
2014 figure fell to 2200
even so cholera remains a threat and a leading cause of infant mortality in Haiti
