Salmonella gram -ve bacteria is infective agent, more than 2200 serotypes
resistant to drying, salting, freezing and other environmental factors
3 main groups
infect only man- S. typhi, S. paratyphi A and C
host adapted for particular animal species- S. cholera-suis in swine, S. dublin in cattle, S. abortus equi in horses S. gallinarum in poultry (S. cholera-suis and S. dublin pathogenic to man)
no particular host preference (man or animal)- S. typhimurium, S.enteritidis
