21. Scarlet Fever
acute contagious disease caused by group A bacteria of streptococcus.
inflammation of nose, throat mouth and red rash.
more prevalent in children
transmitted via inhalation of droplets or sometimes contact with objects e.g. toys
untreated people can spread bacteria for 10- 21 days, possibly months
treated- contagious period ends after 24h
symptoms
red, sore throat
fever
red rash like sandpaper
red skin in underarm and elbow (creases)
white coating of tongue/ back of throat
strawberry tongue
headache
nausea/ vomit
wollen glands
body ache
source of infection
strep. carrier
sore throat
person infected with scarlet fever
through cuts
diagnosis
throat swab
throat culture
rapid antigen/strep test
treatment
penicillin
isolation ends no less than 10 days after onset
